Product Description

RETROFIT: The CookStop is a proactive solution, stopping the cause of stovetop cooking fires (the number one cause of home fires) by turning off your stove if no one is in the room. While children under the age of 5 and adults age 65 or older are more apt to be killed in a kitchen fire, people ages 25 to 44 years old are most apt to be injured because they spend more time cooking. This 3-Wire Version is designed for use in older homes. Homes and buildings typically built before 1993 use stoves with a three wire plug to connect the stove to the 220V outlet behind the stove. HOW IT WORKS: CookStop continuously checks for movement in the kitchen. If the resident leaves the room, or falls asleep, CookStop shuts the stove off. CookStop is the only solution with programmable cooking permissions plus motion sensing. Set the stove for use during only certain hours or days (e.g. no after midnight cooking). Set the stove so student must push a button to cook longer than a set time (ensuring student is attentive to the cooking). CookStop can stop your property, tenants, or loved ones from being part of the statistics. KIT INCLUDES: Monitoring controller (SCU), Stove power controller device (PU), 10-foot SCU-to-PU communication cable, and documentation.

Installation was a snap--unplug the range, plug the CookStop plug into the wall then plug the range into the Cookstop. Mount the control module where it can see the area near the stove, connect the plug to the module with the supplied cable, and you are on your way. The CookStop plug is thin enough that it doesn't interfere with the range drawer. The cable that connects the plug to the control module is standard computer network cable, which makes installation completely flexible.

It can be programmed to behave just about any way you want it to, but the act of programming it is not at all difficult. I have mine set up to turn the stove off if it doesn't detect motion in 12 minutes. When I am baking I have the Hold feature programmed (on the Info button) to keep it on for 1 hour and 15 minutes. When it turns the stove off, it turns off power to all heating elements, but not to the stove's electronics (i.e., clock and timer). I don't have to do anything with it except to set the Hold feature when needed for baking (one touch), and to press the Cook button when I've used Hold or when it actually shuts the stove off. I turned off all the display lights that I could, so it is really innocuous.

I bought this because I occasionally forget to turn off a burner or the oven. I've never come close to starting a fire, but still... . All the programming features are there to control use of the stove by elderly and others who might endanger themselves.

I had occasion to contact the manufacturer about a minor problem. They took care of my problem immediately with no nonsense and no cost to me. I gave them some feedback on the product, and their rep told me quite a bit about their design strategies. I was mightily impressed.

If you have a need for it, this is a fine device. I consider it to be additional fire insurance for those times I'm not paying enough attention.

The only seeming fault is with the "seams" of the stained glass work. The glass itself is very nice, but the soldering (hope that is the right term) is weak and flaking off on the edges in some spots. The lamp is heavy and otherwise beautiful; I enjoy having it in the den.
