8" Variable Speed Bench Grinder with LightPORTER-CABLE 8" Variable Speed Bench Grinder with Light PCB575BG Review
I just purchased this exact same grinder at my local Lowes store for $119 so you might want to shop around before you lay down $189 from the current vendor Amazon has partnered with.I got this home and plugged it in, turned it on and I was very happy to see that there was next to zero vibration from the slowest to the highest speed. Very smooth operation. I plan to use this for rough grinding chisels and the blades on my hand planes. I also plan to use this with buffing wheels for polishing wood projects. I was doubly pleased when I took off the wheel on the right and started it back up and it still spun smooth as silk with just one wheel on it.
The variable speed is important for me considering I plan to use this for grinding and buffing/polishing. When using an 8 inch buffing wheel such as the Beall buffing wheels, which I highly recommend, the 3400 RPMs you get from a single speed grinder is too fast. 8" buffing wheels need to be spinning at 1725 RPM. The 2000 RPM slow setting on this is close enough. When you switch to a Beall 3 or 4 inch bowl buff the surface speed is much less due to the smaller diameter so you need 3400 RPM when using small bowl buffs or polishing wheels.
I read one review that took away points for not having a spindle lock on the motor shaft for wheel removal. I don't think this is that big of a deal; the threads are L/R handed on opposing sides to prevent the shaft rotation loosening the arbor nuts, bottom line is you don't need to tighten the arbor nuts extremely tight so removal is pretty simple by holding the wheel while you loosen the nut.
Build quality was good. I give this grinder 4 stars; if it was made in the United States I would have given it 5 stars and I would have gladly paid the premium for Made In America.
