Product Description
The Leviton line of wireless wall switch receivers (WSS100DX and WSS10GDX) work in conjunction with the wireless occupancy sensors (WSXXI0W) and the wireless remote switch (WSS0SP0X) to provide an optimal solution for retrofit lighting needs. These wireless products combine Leviton's switching technology with selfpowered and wireless technologies, developed and licensed from EnOcean. The wall switch receiver can be installed in place of traditional singlepole wall switches and fits in a standard singlegang wall box. No additional wiring is required.
Leviton WSS10-GDW Wireless Momentary Switch Relay, No Neutral, 120-277V, 1-Pole, White Review
This stuff was sorta confusing to me at first too, until I looked further into how it works, and installed a set.
The WSS10 series is the receiver, and the very basis of this system. It's mounted in place of an existing wall switch, and functions like one - push on, push off. One version requires a neutral wire, one version does NOT, which makes it very versatile in existing setups where pulling new wire is impractical or impossible. The switching is relay based, so it can be used for fluorescent lighting. Each receiver can be used (learned) with up to 6 remote devices (switches and occupancy sensors).
Leviton WSC04-I0W Wireless Self-Powered PIR Occupancy Sensor, 450SF, White
Leviton WSC15-I0W Wireless Self-Powered PIR Occupancy Sensor, 1500SF, White
The WSC04 and WSC15 are ceiling mounted occupancy (motion) sensors, with the difference between the two models being the area of coverage. Depending on how the receiver is set, it can be used for auto-off (Title 24 compliant), or automatic-on. In the auto-off setup, NO BATTERIES are required - there's a solar panel on the front of the unit, so when the lights are on, it gets its energy from that. Nifty!
Leviton WSS0S-P0W Wireless Self-Powered Remote Switch, White
The WSS0S is the wireless wall switch, and works like a typical 3-way/4-way setup. It too uses NO BATTERIES. Hitting the spring loaded switch generates enough energy to send the on/off signal back to the receiver. It can be surface mounted or mounted in a gang box/low voltage ring with at least 5/8" clearance.
So why opt for this setup and not the much cheaper 6696 wireless 3-way wall switch?
- The 6696 is residential grade, and judging by the reviews, not even good enough for that. This is commercial grade, with a 5 year warranty, and made/assembled in the USA.
- The 6696 uses triacs, so power passes through it even though it's off, hence the issues with flickering fluorescent lights and other transformer based lighting. This setup is relay based, so when it's off, it's off, and when it's on, it's 100% on.
- The 6696 has a maximum distance (which means line-of-sight and without interference) of 50 ft. This one, 1000 ft.
- The wireless aspect of the 6696 is analog based, so it's subject to interference, especially when there's more than one unit in the vicinity; this one is digital, and each device has its own 32-bit address.
- The 6696 is 3-way, and that's it. This can be 3-way, 4-way, auto-off with multiple settings for inactivity, or auto-on.
In other words, this setup is much more reliable, durable, and versatile. By itself, yes, it costs more than a conventional setup. However, once you factor in the extra labor for installation and the cost to remove/repair walls, ceilings, etc. to run that new wiring, this is a much more cost effective way to go.
