CONDENSING TANKLESS WATER HEATER, INTERNAL, 10,300 - 199,000 BTU, 9.8 GPM, LPRinnai RC98iP Propane Condensing Tankless Water Heater, 9.8 Gallons Per Minute Review
My oil fired 50 gallon hot water heater finally gave out. I wanted to go tankless and to switch over to propane. Natural gas is not available in my area and for a whole house electric would not be very efficient. I was actually looking to go with the rc80i as my well pump does not pump more than 8 gpm, but oddly enough this unit was less expensive on Amazon. I purchased this along with the 21" exhaust vent pipe. A couple of things I want to make clear to help others is that the water and gas valves DO come with the unit. You do not need to purchase these separately. The ultra efficient Rinnai units come with the valves saving around $80.00. The 21" vent can be cut and made shorter as well. When ordering make sure you get the proper unit. They make units for Propane or Natural gas along with internal or external mounting options. Some of you southerners can mount these outside where it never freezes. Most will need the internal mount units.
I had a plumber friend install this for me. It took two guys about 4 hours to install. I do recommend a licensed contractor do this. There is more to connecting gas or propane than hooking up a line. This newer technology uses a drain line as well. It is a condensing unit and generates water when it runs. You will need a drain line hooked to the unit.
The unit runs very quietly. Much quieter than my oil fired unit. You almost need to put your ear up to it to know it is running.
It hangs on the wall and does not take up much space. This unit is rated at a 96% efficiency which is amazing. There are less expensive 84% units but I figured I was doing this once so I would get the best one available.
I did not have propane at my house. The proper procedure is to install the unit, call for an inspection, and then a Propane company will do the hook up. This may be different in your area. I was set up with a 120 gallon tank and plan on hooking up my gas grille as well. I will have to gauge my usage and update when I know how much fuel it uses.
With any tankless you may notice a little more lag time to get the hot water to your tap, but once its there it will stay hot until you run out of gas.
