Woodstock D4104 R-8 Quick Change Collet Set, 16-Piece Review

I bought a Grizzly G0619 vertical a few weeks ago. Since I had some money to spare I decided to avoid the usual pains in using the machine the "primitive" way and went ahead buying a number of basic accessories for it. So, I ended up with a great milling vise, a set of hold downs, a set of reamers, center drills and this particular quick change collet set.

Grizzly advertises sets from South Bend and also what amount to sets from this same maker. The difference in price is enough to make you think. Still, for some odd reason Grizzly does not offer a complete set of collets (15 instead of 7) from this manufacturer with the R8 arbor. I did my research in the internet and found this set (branded under the Shop Fox name model D4104) from Amazon. The price is over 100 bucks less than the comparable set from South Bend at Grizzly. Very Happy about this!

The set comes in a nice plastic case with 15 collets from 1/8" up to 1", an R8 arbor and a wrench. The quality of construction looks just great, couldn't ask for more, especially at the price. This set should cover any and all needs I will ever have with my mill. I have already used it in a number of projects and it is simply great not to have to change arbors every time you want to hold something different on the mill. The quick collet changing feature is simply great to use and a time saver.

WARNING: One thing NOT clear about this set and sets similar to this is that you have to manually SNAP the collet on the holding ring before you screw it on the arbor!!! Failing to do so will deform and tighten the collet in the arbor in such a way that you will have a very hard time removing it (and your tool) w/o destroying something. Thankfully this happened to me as I was just "playing" with the set and just hand tightening collets in the arbor. Even after hand tightening I had a hard time removing the collet. In other words, I would just place a collet in the arbor and then would screw on the holding ring...PLEASE DON'T do that. I read about stories like this in the internet and they were NOT funny. Imagine messing up a brand new set the first time you use it. Just SNAP the collet in the ring first (you will hear it snap) and THEN screw the assembly on the arbor. For changing collets, remove the ring and collet from the arbor, push the collet with you fingers until it snaps out of the ring and change it.

Other than the lack of instructions or a note making a new buying aware of the potential issue I described in the previous paragraph this is a great set of collets indeed!
